Isn't it possible that depression serves the same function as the Inuit floating their elders off on ice, so as to not spend resources feeding them?

I'm thinking it's more like an apoptosis signal. I'm not saying people actually should kill themselves but society seems to be signalling them to break down faster. Whereas if you feel useful, and you receive external signs you are useful, this signal is staved off.

could be, tho for my own sake I hope not--would prefer to think that uselessness is context-dependent (eg, a person who felt useful at a job then feels useless in unemployment, but may feel useful again if working again)

I think this is why a lot of mental health benefits are reported to come from volunteering.
