this is my biggest disconnect with people--even among my close friends, I don't know many people who are as passionate about something as I am about trains https://twitter.com/AddMeOnAIM/status/953009723913142272 …
I think distractions are an issue, too--but while I find that distractions make it hard for me to focus on my passion, they don't prevent me from having one, whereas my friends generally can't point to any one thing they're as fixated on.

Maybe it's our upbringing that has shaped our attitudes towards things we deem worth focusing on? I was an only child so things such as electronics and science are the only thing I had.

Certainly a factor! I've said in the past that if I hadn't lived in Tokyo as a toddler, and had only ever known American trains, then I probably wouldn't be a fan the way I am today.

Well I got into trains because they were my liberator. I didn't go anywhere, not even out my house before I looked into train travel. They gave me independence and I love them for that.
