Japan had the world's largest city in 1864 too, I thought? Edo had several million people, IIRC. Japan was only a backwater because it wanted to be a backwater.

I know that at some point in the Edo period Edo was actually the world's largest city, I just can't remember the exact year.

Morris claims this was true in 1720 but gives no estimate for Edo's population at that time, meanwhile the consensus is that Beijing was definitely the largest at that time
