If I had to name one thing which encapsulates how hopeless the American passenger rail industry is, it would probably be that they have no idea what platform a *regularly scheduled service* will stop on until it's literally pulling into the station

Go to Japan and you will generally find that the platform IS the waiting area, which is fine because the same trains with the same destinations use the same platforms every day. Not complicated!
