People don't have to pause when going through the gate--saves marginal amount of time per person, which adds up to a whole lot more people being able to go through the gates in the same amount of time

they use proof-of-payment, right? I'm always skeptical of how easy that is to exploit for fare evasion...do any POP-using railways manage to turn a profit?

Yes, POP. I think it works (or worked) in Germany because of the general honesty of the populace. I've never seen revenue/cost figures for these systems. Info seems very hard to find.

There's got to be a cultural thing to offset fare avoidance.

having fare gates that snap shut on you if you don't pay is a pretty good deterrent, esp when a station agent is on the scene seconds later
