She has a point, on some level. A lot of "suburban mediocrity" is consumer-driven and requires a conscious effort to suppress.

I agree with you to the extent that she's more likely repeating the "MUST BE DIFFERENT FOR ITS OWN SAKE OR ELSE" shtick that everyone does.

right--and that's exactly what tears people up! I feel like I get a free pass because (whether it's accurate or not) I at least have a very clear idea of *how* I want the world to be different...
