With that in mind, a built environment that discourages walking is a de facto PRISON, and an entire childhood wasted in that prison is part of why Americans take to cars like cats to catnip--there is no drug more powerful than mobility after you've had it suppressed for so long

Compare with the Japanese ability to let kids as young as 5 or 6 go pretty much anywhere by themselves, by walking and riding trains! I know, I know, they're safe and we're not--but no matter how safe USA becomes, kids will still be prisoners of the built environment here!

So, I really can't disagree with people who point out that cars give you freedom. Of course they do! But why do we keep building this damn prison that you need to buy such an expensive hall pass for? Only

what do you think about last mile problem?
-
About 90% of the last mile "problem" is an environment hostile to walking--a mile is a trivial distance to walk (20 minutes at a leisurely pace) if the environment is conducive to it. Also...places where you can walk easily tend to also have more stuff WITHIN a mile of stations
-
You solve the last mile problem by building more shops and houses more than you do by building more railways and bus routes
