What percent of the population realizes how big a deal this is? Few things change the world like new transport. Look at steamship, locomotives, trucks, jet engines.https://twitter.com/spacex/status/943945832063045632 …

Two years ago today, Falcon 9 delivered 11 Orbcomm satellites to low-Earth orbit followed by the first successful orbital class rocket booster landing. To date, SpaceX has landed 20 boosters—12 on droneships and 8 on land—and flown 4 missions on flight-proven boosters. pic.twitter.com/CPlkGBf589

I want to grab people and shake them. “Access to space is falling 99% in price! Tonnage to space is increasing 10,000%! Don’t you get it!?!?” I mean, sure, knowing that won’t pay your rent this month. But it matters anyway.

buried premise on the price one is that space is a sought-after destination (you could cut the price of bathymetric tours by 100% and they still wouldn't be very popular) but the tonnage increase is very good

the crucial advantage of improvements like steam power or internal combustion is that they could be applied to places that people were already clamoring to get to using whatever means were available--a tangible improvement in something people were already doing

Satellite, military, and science cargo currently finds uses for space at even $10,000/kg. Bring that price down to $100/kg and Berkeley could have its own space telescope.

Satellite internet is slow when you have one satellite at GEO. But if you have 1,000 satellites in LEO it competes with fiber optic undersea cables.

I agree that currently human passenger traffic will probably be limited to national prestige missions and LEO tourism. It’s too early in the space age to say whether emigration will be a big thing, or when it happens.
