Arguing with someone about the locomotives vs MUs for passenger rail in USA...after a bit of back-and-forth, he finally comes out and says "there's no need for a new way of thinking."
Folks...do you think American railways are in need of a new way of thinking?

plausible, but he argued against using MUs because they would require more work for power car maintenance/inspections

I would think more work to modernize train operation would go against the operating ethos of an organization whose primary purpose is to provide cushy jobs for people and not be competitive with air or automobile travel.

yes, having to do any work at all is apparently anathema--doubly so if it's new work and you might have to think about it a little
