That's why I was going for the normalization, Passenger for (AMTK vs JR lines) is about 26/1 JR (wiki is limited in this). Per that same report, Japan has a massive amount more of platform fatalities/injuries, especially in the light rail area.

I'm not going to make the categorical claim that the US is safer because I aim for zero, as the old Chessie-Seaboard says, but for the amount of stuff hauled, it's surprisingly low.
