Yet people bitch constantly about the need to take care of cars and how much they hate other drivers. Transit and walkable cities: letting you buy the car (or motorcycle) you want rather than the car you need.
I think it's at least partly to do with car as status symbol. History of mobility in America very interesting
I think it's a cost thing. "You mean I have to insure and maintain my care, AND buy a bus pass?" It's the insurance that's a real kicker; you pay whether you drive it or it sits in the garage.
That said, I hate urban driving so much that even though I own a family car, I'm so much happier with light rail and metro that it's my usual method of getting around.
