You can use Jorudan's program to calculate fares between any two stations in Japan: https://world.jorudan.co.jp/mln/en/?sub_lang=ja …

Suppose I want to go from Machida (in suburban Tokyo) to Odawara (a satellite city of Tokyo). If I leave Thursday at 11:00 AM, my fare is 590 yen. What if I leave at 5:00 PM? Also 590 yen. If I leave a week later? 590 yen. If I leave RIGHT NOW? 590 yen.

If I want to reserve a seat on a limited express train to go the same distance, then I pay the same surcharge (I think around 600 something yen) if I'm booking same-day as if I'm booking a month early. Prices are RELIABLE making travel easier!

Pay more for: - longer distances traveled - service upgrades (reserved seats, first class seats, etc) Do NOT pay more for: - buying your ticket moments before getting on the train

Does Japan have any sort of rail pass program akin to Europass?

Japan Rail Pass is for tourists only, Japanese residents can't buy it. Other tourist passes work the same way. There are many, many varieties of pass that are for residents, however--the most common, I think, is commuter discount passes
