I'm not sure about that particular model, but you can buy secondhand KiHa 40 Series DMUs (a very similar model) for just $10,000! That's 1/50th the cost of a normal city bus!https://twitter.com/simonsarris/status/938826499473461248 …

Alex how do we buy even one of these small trains for New Hampshire. How much do they cost and where do I start.

That's very affordable. This is going in the 5 year plan. I wonder if its possible to use the Milford -> Nashua tracks and do this basically as a very expensive publicity stunt for NH commuter rail.

one problem tho: the gauge is incorrect (most Japanese trains are 1067mm vs the USA's 1435mm) The trains would need to be partially rebuilt to run on US tracks

don't let that deter you! Japan has had a couple of past situations where they had to create 1435mm versions of 1067mm trains...two examples shown here, can you tell them apart?pic.twitter.com/RlNNJk8cRK

I do think there would be serious value even if only as a publicity stunt for such a thing, if its doable for less than 30K.

          I agree--and at 30K it's still VERY cheap for something transit-related
