I did notice that the T in Boston was not the prettiest metro system I've ever used.

The above-ground L in Chicago also felt quite quaint. Charming, maybe, but not really what you expect in a huge, modern city. And it doesn't link up well with Union Station.
Yeah, people who have never expierenced clean public transit will lionize thier dirty public transit out of misplaced civic pride. I loved the L to death when I lived in Chicago, hated the smell.
I have no idea how filthy socal trains are because they're too far away, too slow, too expensive, run too infrequently...
