There are nice places like Mackinac Island where cars are banned, I'm not worried about more of those popping up. What I'm concerned about is people thinking that taking space away from cars is the same thing as building alternatives to them.https://twitter.com/KaseyKlimes/status/935530268886048773 …

There are so, so many cities in which cars are required to live. Infinitesimally few where cars are truly not an option. Are you concerned about over-correction?

That is a valid concern. I don’t know the backstory of that redesign — were more alternatives necessary?

No, the corridor in question had sidewalks, bike tracks, and a streetcar as well as car lanes--the redesign just got rid of the car lanes and billed it as "making it easier to live without a car." My impression was that a city with options like that is already viable w/o cars...

Viable, yes. But safe? Enjoyable? In functional terms I agree with you, but cars have sprawling negative externalities. Consider the difference in quality now.

I would not recommend this solution everywhere, of course.

yeah, I think that's what gets me about it--certainly it's *nicer* to walk in this corridor now, but there's not really a useful lesson in it for cities which don't already have all those alternate modes in place beforehand

I would hope this is interpreted with acknowledgement for the transit affordances present in the final result.
