There are nice places like Mackinac Island where cars are banned, I'm not worried about more of those popping up. Viable, yes. But safe? Enjoyable? In functional terms I agree with you, but cars have sprawling negative externalities. Consider the difference in quality now.

yeah, I think that's what gets me about it--certainly it's *nicer* to walk in this corridor now, but there's not really a useful lesson in it for cities which don't already have all those alternate modes in place beforehand

I would hope this is interpreted with acknowledgement for the transit affordances present in the final result.
