The city in OP didn't really make life much easier for non-drivers: imagine if it had tried to undertake the same project in a universe where it didn't have a tram already there.

That is a valid concern. I don’t know the backstory of that redesign — were more alternatives necessary?
-
No, the corridor in question had sidewalks, bike tracks, and a streetcar as well as car lanes--the redesign just got rid of the car lanes and billed it as "making it easier to live without a car." My impression was that a city with options like that is already viable w/o cars...
-
Viable, yes. But safe? Enjoyable? In functional terms I agree with you, but cars have sprawling negative externalities. Consider the difference in quality now.
-
I would not recommend this solution everywhere, of course.
-
yeah, I think that's what gets me about it--certainly it's *nicer* to walk in this corridor now, but there's not really a useful lesson in it for cities which don't already have all those alternate modes in place beforehand
-
I would hope this is interpreted with acknowledgement for the transit affordances present in the final result.

My town recently installed a sidewalk on a main road and its glorious. I had almost been killed twice walking that road by cars passing on the right.
