      coupla things: - stupid to eliminate existing IC cards just bc you can use a credit card or cell phone - "Commuter rail passengers would be required to tap both entering and exiting trains to measure distance traveled and assign fares accordingly" do this for the whole system!

          IIRC London still has Oyster Cards after switching to the Cubic system, and they remain more convenient for tourists, of which Boston has its fair share. In Japan, IC cards are everywhere but you can always pay cash too. What is the USA's problem w backwards compatibility?

          yeah likewise which is why this project does not inspire my confidence I'm glad they *mentioned* proper fare collection on commuter rail but I don't expect them to do a good job with it, or to apply the lesson to their other routes
