IIRC London still has Oyster Cards after switching to the Cubic system, and they remain more convenient for tourists, of which Boston has its fair share. In Japan, IC cards are everywhere but you can always pay cash too. What is the USA's problem w backwards compatibility?

lol i assume so, unless they're gonna strangle the system even more by having people exit one at a time, tapping a handheld console that the conductor holds

yeah likewise which is why this project does not inspire my confidence I'm glad they *mentioned* proper fare collection on commuter rail but I don't expect them to do a good job with it, or to apply the lesson to their other routes
