I know you are not a freight guy, but 18wheelers and autos are not coexisting well on our interstates, and heavy trucks are destroying them.

then u need smaller trucks/smaller batches shipping by rail is not practical for goods that are lightweight, high value, or time sensitive; only about 5% of freight goes by train in Japan (and also in Massachusetts!)

Smaller trucks are reasonable but North America's landmass + heavy industry require hella freight to maintain.

yes and on a continental scale, a lot of it is cheap heavy stuff with low time sensitivity, so rail is very successful but on the *local* scale of massachusetts, most of that freight needs to go by road

Oh without a doubt. Pan Am is America's worst shortline railroad, also.

When I was in Spain a few years ago, I was impressed with how many of the highways are buried underground, especially in Madrid.
