I did a thread on this before: freight rail use in Massachusetts is as low as it is in Japanhttps://twitter.com/380kmh/status/892569014383325184 …

Rail's mode share in freight is high in USA overall, but for Massachusetts? Same as Japan: https://www.massdot.state.ma.us/Portals/17/docs/TM1.pdf … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Freight_Railway_Company … pic.twitter.com/5dkDgoPryQ

Despite an extensive and very well-used railroad network in Japan, the vast majority of freight goes by sea or by truck...

...back in the 1890s, when American rail was in its heyday, New England was one of the only places w higher passenger revenue than freight!

It's unlikely that our freight mode share could change even with significant investment...but passenger could:https://twitter.com/380kmh/status/892420849516646400 …

A few infill stations + modest frequency improvements + marketing = 200% ridership increase Imagine what further improvements would do! https://twitter.com/StreetsblogUSA/status/892419762994786304 …

This is a huge opportunity which is being squandered by the inertia of freight rail operators--one way or another, this will change!
