Picknelly is either an idiot or talking in bad faith here: we HAVE east-west highways and intercity buses alreadypic.twitter.com/eN4DbWYsOr

Picknelly: if you're so worried that people will rush onto trains and abandon your buses at the first opportunity, build rail yourself!
In his defense, I *am* very fond of the idea of a general transportation pass--sort of. Costs and distances vary way too much...
...to actually use it like a pass, where you flash it and ride for free: what you need instead is something like a statewide CharlieCard
A prepaid card which deducts the appropriate amount for any given kind of trip, across all modes.
Anyway, this is all from a piece in the advocate:http://valleyadvocate.com/2017/10/23/will-western-mass-ever-get-high-speed-rail/ …
Incredibly frustrating for advocates of CONVENTIONAL RAIL to lie to people by billing it as High-Speed Rail. They are not the same thing!
But then I see the dishonesty and excuses peddled by the "do nothing" crowd, and I'm left assuming these are just terms of engagement
My takes: - Urban & suburban rail are more important than intercity rail - Modernization & solvency are top priorities, not expansion
Keeping those in mind, Boston's urban and suburban network should eventually be tied into the rest of New England, including Western MA...
...this can be done in tandem with modernization etc, or after it, but shouldn't happen *before* it
