not sure but a big part of it appears to be low barriers to entry--tons of laughably small businesses there, seems like anyone can start up

America is obviously more successful in tech startups then Japan, I honestly think America has a superior startup culture

We're better with tech startups (debatable), but they're clearly better in cafes and restaurants...which is more accessible to most people?

I can't look at this objectively because there are a lot of privately owned restaurants where I live and I know several restaurant owners
