This fare rate is for the JR intercity (ie, excluding urban networks) lines--this morning I did the math for Odakyu: about $0.17/mihttps://twitter.com/380kmh/status/889952911266119680 …

JR offers slightly lower rates for its urban networks, but even then I don't think they get below $0.20/mi

Odakyu's Odawara Line is 51 miles; the base fare from Shinjuku to Odawara is 880 yen. MBTA from South Station to Worcester (44mi) = $11.50

The MBTA rate is about the same as the JR intercity rate for Honshu (44 miles at $0.27/mi = $11.88), but the equipment is costlier...

...and with low frequencies and low speeds, there aren't enough passengers for that fare to be viable.

Moreover, transit costs in USA are outrageously high by international standards for reasons other than equipment:https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-05-31/the-u-s-has-forgotten-how-to-do-infrastructure …

Improving commuter rail in Boston means running more economical equipment between more developed stations at higher speeds and frequencies

...but none of that is remotely possible if costs can't be brought under control first. Unfortunately I'm really not sure where to begin.

Replying to @380kmh
Open up management and supply contract competition to foreign firms, would be my first suggestion.

I would be happy to see a little competition among domestic firms instead of what appears to be sheer graft
