the thread about intercontinental travel is premised on dramatic improvements in maglev affordability--it is not possible today
USA today only has conventional rail for cross country, NYC to LA takes 3 nights and 4 days
But so is the whole idea that it's just more comfortable to ride trains? Never that it's more affordable?
The idea is to get travel time difference low enough that the increase in amenities needed won't make it uncompetitive in cost
NYC to LA by plane = 5 hrs (roughly) by current trains = 4 days, 3 nights by high speed rail = 14 hrs at best by maglev some day = 10 hrs
I really don't know anything about this but what is so different in China that it works. Government money?
