Heh. No argument there. I’d just like to see a Halifax, Nova Scotia—Santiago, Chile maglev network before hooking up to Eurasia.
The idea of the trunk route is it's the part which all America-Eurasia trips would have to use at some point

...which you're gonna get from a 14 hour flight, assuming you can get it direct and don't need any layovers which bump it up to 30+?

I guess I was being dishonest earlier: for a number of trips, this could compete with planes for time as well as cost and comfort

Hmmm, I hadn’t thought of layovers. Of course this assumes good switching & you’re not caught in a train yard in Alaska for 10 hours. :-)
