In Boston, commuter rail frequency is much lower than subway frequency, has a capacity-throttling layout, and uses locos instead of MUspic.twitter.com/MAyDbdyTzF
"Commuter rail lines and subway lines have different predecessors" yes, as was the case in Japan too. Convergent evolution is a thing, folks
That commuter rail in Boston is still using loco-hauled trains etc is evidence of arrested development, not reflective of passenger needs
Same gauge?
depends on the subway line and commuter line
Most subways in Tokyo are narrow gauge, but a few are standard and one is 1372mm. Same story for commuter lines
IOW the stock would not be interchangeable even if it were all 3rd rail power (just noticed the pantograph on the commuter train)?
Most subway lines don't just have hypothetically interchangeable stock, they literally run through service onto commuter lines
Narrow gauge subways are interoperated with narrow gauge commuter lines, ditto for standard and 1372mm gauge. Only a few subways don't...
...the one in the picture, the red Marunouchi Line, is one of those which doesn't interoperate w commuter lines, none of which use 3rd rail
The Ginza and Oedo Lines also don't have any commuter interoperation. Ginza is 3rd rail, Oedo uses a linear induction motor.
Iirc the Sydney train system integrates the subway and commuter concepts into the same network. You ride same trains downtown as to airport.
yes! there shouldn't be much distinction in form, as both are trying to accomplish the same thing (move lots of people in a little space)
Very true. Only obstacle to further integration / thru running is track gauge difference (3 different gauges in Greater Tokyo/Kanto alone)
