The people riding filthy subways or waiting for infrequent commuter rail aren't gonna be helped by high-speed rail https://twitter.com/kenklippenstein/status/913659675631079424 …

Local and regional travel = the vast majority of travel, regardless of mode (guess where most US rail ridership is concentrated?)

Easiest way I can describe this problem is: imagine building the Interstate Highway System but every off-ramp leads to dirt paths

Road network before a high-speed road network Rail network before a high-speed rail network

one difference is rail stations are downtown; airports are far out. short taxi or bus from rail station could work
-
rail stations are often downtown, but look at how countries like China or Japan (even France iirc) built their HSR; many greenfield stations
-
Avigon has a shuttle (TER / freq 30 mins, hopefully synced with train) to HSR to near city center + local buses https://www.google.com/maps/@43.9349627,4.7777229,14z?hl=en …
-
but if you're going to anywhere but in/near old city center, I'd guess vast majority drive / taxi to HSR station
