I think "low density" and "monofunctional" (I'm reading that as purely residential, correct me if wrong) basically covers it.

That's a really nice example of an American suburb too, but I'd still call that sprawl and not the Japanese one.

I'm not arguing that Japan is the metric by which one defines good, if they have sprawl they have sprawl, but I don't think Tokyo has a lot-

-compared to the fact the entire US is basically defined by it. Many US "cities" are really just sprawl and nothing else, you've seen that.

Yeah, I hear this--but there's a clear concept of *extent* in sprawl which is misleading, and density is less the issue than walkability

True, but I think density tends to imply walkablility, and below a certain density walkability is impractical.
