Haunted Forrest 🌲 added,
Since I booked my return trip to Tokyo two days early instead of one, I was able to grab the last available window seat
I was skeptical of the economic justification of the Hokkaido Shinkansen but if this keeps up it'll be a HUGE boost for JR Hokkaido
The driving force behind the high ridership is tourism, not local travel (I'm assuming)--the same happened in Aomori when Shin-Aomori opened
It turns out that Tokyo's tourist market is so huge that even a fraction of it is much higher than ALL local travel demand up here
Still too soon to say if it's a trend that will continue but if so, maybe Shikoku and other boonies will get Shinkansen after all someday
As much as this might help Shikoku I can't imagine it being profitable. I take a highway bus to Osaka monthly and it's never full.
I'm curious about the impact of the great Seto bridge on Kagawa as a whole. I fear it didn't live up to the hype
I think that's correct--likewise with the Seikan Tunnel, at least until last year
I'd love to see data about travel to Hokkaido before and after the Shinkansen, although maybe it's still too early for it to be meaningful
Agreed--the only data I have on Shinkansen impact is from a JR East presentation when the Hachinohe extension openedpic.twitter.com/rr0tk1N1yS
