this is only really a problem for trying to ride Yufuin-no-Mori...all the other trains I'm trying to ride are still within reach

I can ride it from Kokura to Hakata in the evening (hopefully with some daylight still)...this will also buy me lots of time in Fukuoka

are japanese rail companies good at removing and repairing obstacles? Is it a common occurance?
-
depends on the obstacle--disasters happen frequently enough and most are dealt with quickly, but in rural areas it can take much longer
-
JR Hokkaido, on Japan's emptiest island, has effectively shut down most of the Hidaka Line because they can't afford the repairs (iirc)
-
But a similar degree of flooding washed out the Fukuchiyama Line (near Osaka) a few years ago and was fixed within days
-
Record has to go to wartime Japan though...railway service to Hiroshima was restored 2 days after the bomb went off
