Two main objections to the "designer modern" style of condos/apartments that's become common lately, one is economic, the other aesthetic

Not to mention the fact that most people there live in single-family detached--which we could do too with narrower streets, yards, etc

We build single-family detached housing here much too large, and upon finding out that it's beyond many people's price range...

...we skip straight to multifamily without ever building smaller or closer together single family housing. It's lazy & ignores possibilities

it's not lazy, it's literally outlawed in many places.
