Two main objections to the "designer modern" style of condos/apartments that's become common lately, one is economic, the other aesthetic
-
-
Lots of small buildings > a few large ones Several small new projects every year > a large project every few years
-
This is extra important if you're the sort who cares about inequality & concentration of wealth--1 owner for every 50 units, or for every 5?
-
Japan is no stranger to multifamily housing (and what they have, frankly, isn't very aesthetically appealing either)...
-
...but in my experience they have a better grasp of the economic problem--most apartment/condo buildings are relatively small
-
Not to mention the fact that most people there live in single-family detached--which we could do too with narrower streets, yards, etc
-
We build single-family detached housing here much too large, and upon finding out that it's beyond many people's price range...
-
...we skip straight to multifamily without ever building smaller or closer together single family housing. It's lazy & ignores possibilities
-
it's not lazy, it's literally outlawed in many places.

It's not so much ornament but the quality of space created - public spaces are usually negative spaces rather than Gardens, courtyards, etc
