Operation by line, not by train--new crews take over whenever a train crosses onto another operator's linepic.twitter.com/3TNkaCoX5O
This is unfair, they're comparing trains in the densest part of Japan with trains everywhere in France, Germany, etc.
they have all the JRs; Kyushu Shikoku and Hokkaido combined have comparable density to Germany but below France and UK
Greater London and Honshu have vaguely similar population densities. If Honshu is on the chart, Greater London should be too
the chart is from an article about Tokyo...it makes sense to be more specific about Japan than other countries
but i see a point. instead of doing a CR to Regional all-day rail like Europe why not go from CR to through running.
I want both of these....regional all-day rail with thru-running...my point is that thru running should start w low-hanging fruit (subways)
Not sure if we can through run with ease. you'd need electrification first.
Certainly can't be done with ease, just more ease and more benefits than building a new tunnel
The tunnel also would need electrification so it's a wash
could run with dual-mode hybrid locos for electric in NSRL tunnel.
through running with CR to subway will have a complicated transfer of locomotive power at the jct location.
That's why CR should convert to EMU before anything else
the funny thing is that JR is also now building core-capacity relief lines too.
they built one (Ueno-Tokyo) and it was elevated, not submerged
ueno-tokyo yes elevated but nonetheless a core-capacity relief.
Yea, after a dozen or so subways first
and the shonan-shinjuku services to try to get people of the yamate line.
Didn't need any new construction for that iirc
IIRC - repurposing a freight spur and a flyover and a switch or three.
