The northeast's freight rail infrastructure is pretty deficient relative to the rest of the US' so I can't say I'm surprised
That would account for some of it--I imagine the lack of much bulk goods traffic is another factor (no coal or iron mines here, etc)
IIRC most rail freight here is lumber, paper, construction supplies, and machinery
That makes sense. The urbanized northeast isn't exactly a raw goods exporter
right--lots of short distances and high value goods in freight traffic here, both areas where trucks have serious advantages
