Rail's mode share in freight is high in USA overall, but for Massachusetts? Same as Japan: https://www.massdot.state.ma.us/Portals/17/docs/TM1.pdf … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Freight_Railway_Company …pic.twitter.com/5dkDgoPryQ

In Massachusetts, ofc, rail's passenger mode share is about the same as freight...4.9% of all trips http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/Portals/17/docs/MassDOT_TransportationFacts2015.pdf …pic.twitter.com/AbVUwRIsNq
Freight rail here is technically advanced, so it's hard to imagine the mode share improving dramatically thru modernization...but passenger?
Small state dominated by a single large metro area, with most development dating to the railroad era? I think we can get that share up...
Top countries for passenger rail by mode share: - Japan (30.5%) - Switzerland (17.2%) - Austria (11.5%) - Denmark & Hungary (10.1% each)
Denmark has fewer people than MA, is similarly dominated by a single metro area, and has a larger area to boot--a 10% goal seems reasonable
Particularly when you consider that mode share doesn't always change by cannibalizing other modes--how many *new trips* could be made?pic.twitter.com/qSXMXS7HR3
