Freight rail here is technically advanced, so it's hard to imagine the mode share improving dramatically thru modernization...but passenger?
Small state dominated by a single large metro area, with most development dating to the railroad era? I think we can get that share up...
Top countries for passenger rail by mode share: - Japan (30.5%) - Switzerland (17.2%) - Austria (11.5%) - Denmark & Hungary (10.1% each)
Denmark has fewer people than MA, is similarly dominated by a single metro area, and has a larger area to boot--a 10% goal seems reasonable
Particularly when you consider that mode share doesn't always change by cannibalizing other modes--how many *new trips* could be made?pic.twitter.com/qSXMXS7HR3
you are my favorite new tweeter
thanks!
The northeast's freight rail infrastructure is pretty deficient relative to the rest of the US' so I can't say I'm surprised
That would account for some of it--I imagine the lack of much bulk goods traffic is another factor (no coal or iron mines here, etc)
IIRC most rail freight here is lumber, paper, construction supplies, and machinery
That makes sense. The urbanized northeast isn't exactly a raw goods exporter
right--lots of short distances and high value goods in freight traffic here, both areas where trucks have serious advantages
