High speed rail is a rallying point in the USA but lack of it is not the main problem with rail in this country
-
-
The most useful railways in the USA right now are subways and some other urban transit systems--suburban rail is weak, intercity a joke
-
The top priority has to be modernizing urban and suburban rail: even in HSR countries, these carry far more people
-
With that said--what are HSR prospects here? The first lines to open won't be where the most people need it (NE)...
-
...they'll be within large, wealthy states with a lot of intrastate traffic: Texas and California, prob Florida after that
-
Coordination between many states, which you'd need in the NE corridor, will remain a serious obstacle
