I notice that in California, bikers often ride on the sidewalk, not the street. So they put other people in danger rather than themselves.

I disagree with this, if you choose to bike you're choosing to assume some risk, pedestrians on the sidewalk don't get to consent.

Especially if you're traveling long distances, speeds that make biking worthwhile as a commuting option are only possible on the street.
