I find the buses I ride in Western MA are often too long to handle corners w/o driving over a curb or forcing oncoming traffic to back up...

...and I imagine it's the same in other cities with tighter corners or narrower streets. So why are 40' buses the standard?

Full size city buses in Japan range from 7m to 10.5m in length, or 23 to 34 feet. In USA, it's 29 to 40 feet...are ours that much busier?pic.twitter.com/bafqCIhkoP
