Transit is already far ahead of private vehicles in terms of electrification--and it's ahead in terms of autonomous operation as well.

Main issue with driverless (in the UK at least) will be with Union industrial action to protect their membership.

Yes, they're kinda hopeless like that...in Japan there were major disruptions when they were phasing out steam locomotives.

It was only when they realized that their membership was going to decline no matter what that the unions became more agreeable

Yeah, I suspect the same will happen again. Disruption on the Southern Line out of London is essentially this happening already.

Depends on how long and painful the unions want to make it. There's also a huge political element here too of course.
