They randomly have plain clothes inspectors and uniformed inspectors come and check tickets. It's not perfect, but most people pay
Assuming pay-at-door, you usually pay while exiting--pick up a ticket when you get on & an updating fare table tells u how much to pay

payment depends on distance traveled, so the ticket you get will just say where you boarded--the table shows payment based on boarding stop

So match the name on your ticket with the name on the board, and the fare will update as you move down the line
