...sneaking in the unmanned doors on the Green Line during rush hour, walking through broken gates that are stuck in the open position...
Sure--but the Japanese system is also made for a high-trust society which, nonetheless, excludes the possibility of fare evasion by design

How does it work?
-
fare gates at most stations so you can't get to the platforms without paying; rural or low-ridership lines check fares at the train door
-
which is to say--there is no possibility of using the service if you don't pay; no inspection you can avoid etc even just be being lucky
-
How often do the trains/metros come? In Berlin they come and go every 5 minutes [depends on line and S-Bahn different from U-Bahn)
-
Depends on the route--in major cities, up to every 2 minutes. More rural lines, where you'll likely pay at the door, can be as rare as 4/day
-
How fast is buying a ticket?
-
Assuming pay-at-door, you usually pay while exiting--pick up a ticket when you get on & an updating fare table tells u how much to pay
-
payment depends on distance traveled, so the ticket you get will just say where you boarded--the table shows payment based on boarding stop
