Also, lol @ the Australia comparison. Australia has much more extensive commuter rail than the USA!

I have only been to Amsterdam and Paris. Paris is not quite as good as Tokyo or Osaka, definitely better than New York.
-
Amsterdam has OK transit, not as good as New York, but better than every other US city.
-
I took the Thalys between Amsterdam and Paris, the experience was significantly worse than the Shinkansen. Better than Amtrak though.
-
Overall I find it frustrating that Americans look up to Europe and not Japan on this stuff. Europe is not too bad, but Japan does it best.

Amen, this is constantly on my mind

And commuter rail is really what sucks most about US transit. Many cities have it, but it's a joke in nearly all of them.

I studied in New Haven CT for some years. My impression was not dissimilar, tho. & we have very good transit here in Denmark.

(Naturally Japan is in a class by itself. Hence the force of your material...)

it's not at western European levels at all. Though NYC has very frequent service where its covered, once you get to commuter rail territory.

It certainly isn't close to German or Swiss levels.

I can verify that it's worse than Helsinki's. (The rest of Finland, not so much.)
