Long-distance trains are ok if you're on vacation or if you're traveling one-way (and they're not great at those, either)...

...but for actual regular travel? Absolutely useless. Boston to Springfield is one of those routes: I virtually never use it tho.
-
Not for lack of trying either! But if I want to use it I'd better have somewhere to sleep in Boston, especially since the ONLY departure...
-
...from Springfield is at 5:15 PM, and arrives in Boston around 8 (assuming it's actually on time, which is a rare thing indeed)
-
If I want to get to Boston in the morning, or to just have a day trip there and return at night, I gotta take a bus or drive.
-
Lol--my initial reaction wasn't even accurate: two (at least) of the routes that are retained also offer that same useless frequency

Vermonter and Adirondacker are one round-trip / day
-
that Fort Worth - OKC is the most surprising Amtrak service in the map
-
With that route still on there, and the Vermonter etc, I think the actual logic behind the map must involve routes which are state-backed
-
Profitable (NE Corridor) or receiving some level of state funding, yes.
