Plenty of stations are located in places where there aren't enough passengers to justify an attended station (ie, pre-board ticket check)

What about a turnstile? That's how NJ Transit has some un-manned stations.

The plaform was over a street bridge so people didn't. Too high. But I guess that won't be true everywhere.

It was the PATH Station at Harrison, NJ. Ticket kiosks only. Google Maps has pictures of the turnstiles.
