Every city relies on its commerce, and every commercial part of a city relies on customer turnover--how many ppl can pass thru in an hour?
-
This is why the busiest commercial districts in a city like Tokyo are around its busiest train stations--they bring in the most people!
-
This is also why those same commercial districts are primarily navigated on foot--you can have way more people there at a time that way!

But AV delivery vans, AV buses, etc.? It's nice to give pedestrians more space, but I don't think we should halt all surface transport
-
Shared streets exist now and are anything but an obstacle to all surface transport--this just makes them more immune to bad drivers
-
You cannot really compare it with anything current. In shared spaces people still give way to cars, because they are afraid
-
Cars give way to people and people give way to cars as a mutual courtesy in most of my experience with shared streets
-
Still, I would not want buses to give way in between intersections. Nor I would want shared space speeds on main streets
