Actually, travel from SF to NYC took 4 days back then and still does even today! One day to get to Chicago, then three to the Pacific.

It is extremely sad, I agree. A wonderful way to travel. I did Lviv to Kiev on an over-night train a v long time ago w my aunt. Magical.
