All those grey lines in the Tokyo map are regional railways with the same frequency and service standards as subways
In other words, not only is Tokyo's network of *subways* denser than the others, but its subways only make up a small % of its rapid transit
Now at (roughly) the same scale, look at NYC, London, Paris, and Moscow--at least in Paris some regional rail is highlighted in color!pic.twitter.com/55elFfydoT
You can see that NYC has an astonishingly *dense* network of subway lines where they exist, but their coverage of the metro is lacking...
NY's map is a bit of a cheat. They use interlining a lot, as well as counting express and local services as separate.
This map doesn't show duplicate lines for express and local services--it treats all lines of the same "color" as one line
