All those grey lines in the Tokyo map are regional railways with the same frequency and service standards as subways
-
-
-
In other words, not only is Tokyo's network of *subways* denser than the others, but its subways only make up a small % of its rapid transit
-
Now at (roughly) the same scale, look at NYC, London, Paris, and Moscow--at least in Paris some regional rail is highlighted in color!pic.twitter.com/55elFfydoT
-
You can see that NYC has an astonishingly *dense* network of subway lines where they exist, but their coverage of the metro is lacking...
-
...you can also see Paris's rail network is about as dense as Tokyo's, tho less of their regional rail is held to subway standards afaik

Have to say I'm impressed by the number of underwater lines for Hong Kong.
-
lmao they show ferries like subways, it's def misleading
-
Oh ok, I assume those blue lines are ferries. They don't continue onto land now that I look. Misleading as the other maps don't show ferries
-
I've ridden one of those ferries though, they're super cheap and convenient. It'd be better if you didn't have to get off the train though.
