The aesthetic is very Ghibliesque. Did you watch Castle in the Sky or Nausicaa in your youth?

Of course--I also went to preschool in Japan; Japanese cities are at the heart of this aesthetic (but not the only ingredient)

Ironically I think the closest real world analogies to it would be abandoned jungle cities I.e. India, Mesoamerica, indochina, etc.

Not much of that in Japan imo. I find the aesthetic nostalgic as well,I think it's mainly due to the movies and depictions of jungle temples

That I was exposed to when I was younger. Back when I still thought places like that really existed in some place I'd yet to visit.
